The women from Nazaré beach, traditionally wear seven skirts, one on top of the other. People say that they represent the seven virtues; the seven days of the week; the seven colors of the rainbow; the seven waves of the sea, among other biblical, mythical and magical attributions involving the number seven.
The origin and explanation are not consensual, but are always linked to the sea and the life of those who subsist on it. Either to shelter themselves while they waited for their husbands and sons on the beach or to help them count the waves of the sea, because every 7 waves the sea calmed down and the boats reached the land.
